Walking into your first reformer Pilates class can feel a little intimidating, especially if you’ve never used the machine before. Here’s what actually happens, so you know exactly what to expect before you book.
What to wear
Comfortable, fitted clothing that allows a full range of movement, similar to what you’d wear to any studio class. Grip socks are required to take part in a class, since bare feet or regular socks aren’t safe on the reformer’s footbar. If you don’t already own a pair, you can buy them in the studio for £8 before your first session.
What actually happens in the class
You’ll be introduced to the reformer machine and shown the basics: how to get on and off safely, how the springs and straps work, and the core positions you’ll use throughout. Because we keep classes small, your instructor will correct your form individually as you go, rather than you following along at the back trying to keep up.
Expect a full-body workout that’s low-impact but genuinely challenging. Most first-timers feel muscles they didn’t know they had the next day.
Why we recommend starting with 3 sessions
One class isn’t really enough to judge how reformer Pilates feels for you, your body is still learning the machine in session one. By your third class, the movements start to feel familiar and you can actually feel what proper reformer training does. That’s why every new client starts with our 3 sessions for £49 offer rather than a single drop-in.
Is it really for every body?
Yes. Whatever your fitness level, age, or experience, instructors adapt the session to you from the very first class. Pilates is genuinely one of the most adaptable forms of exercise there is, precisely because every exercise on the reformer can be made easier or harder just by adjusting the springs.
